Social Media – a few ideas

Even the small business can make use of social media to aid in their promotion and marketing. Indeed, facebook pages and groups are often ideal for many small outfits, artists, craftspeople and the like. There is the added advantage in that customer relations can work out far more direct and personalised, less a case of the corporate wall before current or prospective clients or customers. Tumblr is often useful for the more arty of businesses and producers but other businesses can find real value there. Any business that can use pictures/images – of their products, people enjoying the services offered, the results of work done – all such can find a use for Instagram and Pinterest. Any business can manage to find a use for promotional video, hence Youtube and following on from that, facebook, twitter etc. can all be used for business purposes.

It’s all about geometry. The trend is design right now centers around interesting shapes and layers that combine to create stunning visuals. While there have been periods where squares or circles were the shape of choice, that has shifted to more interesting asymmetrical shapes, lesser used elements such as diamonds and layering of shapes of all kids. Here’s what’s trending in design this month: 1. Diamonds The simple diamond shape that you drew in elementary school is popping up in plenty of designs. From use as a container for photos to an outline for visual emphasis to the dominant part of a photograph, the shape has plenty of flexibility. And it simple. This style is no more than a square turned on its side. The sharp lines make for interesting reference points in the design and can add an element of motion or direction that doesn’t exist otherwise. The diamond stands out in these designs because it is so different. While the shape can be used in a number of ways, it can be

Design Trends — Content, Design, Styles, Marketing

When you are looking to get your message across it is important to bear a number of things in mind:

  • the make-up of the content you are putting out there, that it has the right written message as well as the right illustration
  • that the sorts of imagery sits well alongside the text, here not only graphics or photo illustration have an impact but also video which is becoming more and more important
  • that you are putting things out on the right channels, this means choosing out of not only your website or blog but also from a range of social media channels, some based around text, like twitter, some based around imagery, like pinterest and instagram, some based around video, like youtube and vimeo
  • all of this works better, as well, if those posts are timed properly, on a day and at a time that reaches the eyes, ears and minds of as many interested people as possible

Here are a few ideas:

One thing I’ve learned on social media is that what time you post something makes a big difference. While it’s not an exact science, picking when to post on social media is a good strat…

An interesting visual presence above the scroll is the first impression a user gets of a website. Whether that user continues to click can depend on a number of things, including imagery, readability and overall interest in the content. This month we are looking at three trends that make a distinct first impression—dark color overlays on images, brutalism and hollow lettering styles. Here’s what’s trending in design this month: 1) Dark overlay on images It doesn’t matter if the hero image is still or moving, a dark color overlay can help even colors in a way that makes it easier to add text and other elements to a layer on top of the image. While this might sound like a shortcut at first, there’s a lot of value in this technique. The primary reason to opt for a color overlay is to enhance readability. Most images contain light and dark color variances, making it a challenge to add lettering that is readable on every device. Even if there’s a perfect placement for desktop wide screens,

Content – Design, Styles, Marketing – 6

The colour you use adds not only emotion but points to other basic areas of meaning. It is part of the message. It has its own psychology.

There is a real difference in the effects that, for example, a bright, full, basic colour will have upon someone looking at your content in comparison with that provoked by a softer, gentler, perhaps pastel shade will generate. There is a difference between the strident, blaring simplicity of one and the more subdued suggestions of the other. This can and should be echoed in the accompanying text. Are you shouting a statement or telling a story perhaps with a little decoration? Are you making a plain statement or suggesting a scene, a background, gesturing towards a series of feelings.

Similarly your choice of illustration – accompanied by its own palette and the emotions it brings along – makes a statement, it aids in telling the story, it also suggests what all of your content should be bringing to the table. You are looking to have particular groups, segments of the viewing public relate to your content in an effectively positive way. One should reinforce the other and so on – colour, image, text, channel, timing.
